Ki Manteb Soedarsono Suggests National Shadow Puppet Day

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM – Minister of Social Affairs Khofifah Indar Parawansa said on November 7, 2003, Indonesian wayang (shadow puppet) has been recognized by UNESCO as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. So the people of Indonesia should be proud and preserve the heritage and traditional art of shadow puppet performance.

“The world has acknowledged it, so we as the owner of this culture should be proud of and continue to preserve it,” explained Khofifah, after the overnight performance with Shadow Pupper Master (Dalang) Ki Manteb Soedarsono and guest star Syakurun (Kirun) as the closing of the 2017 Heroes Day series, through a written statement on Sunday (11/27/2017).

Meanwhile, Dalang Ki Manteb Soedarsono, who won the world award certificate for his contribution to maintain the shadow puppet tradition, expressed the idea of National Shadow Puppet Day.

Ki Manteb said he and the community of shadow puppet lovers proposed the 7th of November to be set as the National Shadow Puppet Day.

He also hopes for government support as well as the Ministry of Social Affairs that organizes puppet shows for the people of Jakarta.

This kind of support, he added, is the real effort in preserving the nation’s culture and introducing shadow puppet art to the younger generation.

Khofifah welcomed the proposal of National Shadow Puppet Day. She undertakes to organize workshops and a series of shaddow puppet show activities in other areas of Indonesia by first coordinating with the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Tourism.

“This is our extraordinary cultural treasure We fully support Ki Manteb’s spirit for the preservation and sustainability of this art,” said the Minister.
