UNESCO will provide experts from Asia-Pacific countries to help develop a water source in Sibolangit district, Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, which is used by local residents in Medan and surrounding areas, an official says.
‘UNESCO will provide experts to study the water and make it the best possible water source,’ UNESCO Jakarta director Shahbaz Khan told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of an international symposium titled ‘Integrated Action for Global Water and Environmental Sustainability’ in Medan on Wednesday.
Khan said the Sibolangit water source, which has been used since the Dutch-colonial era, was unique as it consistently produced clear and clean water despite being surrounded by residential and industrial areas.
Hundreds of participants in the symposium, held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of UNESCO, visited the water source on Thursday.
