
JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM — As part of the support to improve the livelihoods of the youth around the World Heritage sites and other destinations which are listed as the ten key tourist destinations in Indonesia declared by President Joko Widodo in early 2016, UNESCO Office, Jakarta in collaboration with Citi Indonesia (Citibank) are implementing the program Youth Economy Empowerment in Indonesia’s Heritage Sites through Capacity Building and Sustainable Tourism. The program is being conducted through promoting creative economy sectors and Indonesia’s rich intangible cultural heritage in a number of areas across the nation especially in Central Java.
Related to this, a beneficiaries gathering program called #KitaMudaKreatif: Maju Bersama Karya — “Program Pemberdayaan Anak Muda Kreatif Indonesia Melalui Dukungan Kolaborasi UNESCO – Citi Indonesia” is held today on Monday, 30 October 2017 at Galeri Komunitas, Karanganyar Village, Borobudur, Magelang.
Head of Sub-Directorate of Tangible World Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Yunus Arbi, commented that collaboration work between UNESCO Office Jakarta and Citibank Indonesia in empowering youth community within the World Heritage property of Borobudur Temple Compound is one of concrete action to explore the educational value of the site. Therefore Ministry of Education and Culture as focal point for World Cultural Heritage in Indonesia support this capacity building programme — as part of the 5C’s (credibility, conservation, capacity building, communication, community) strategic objectives of the World Heritage Convention — for youth in creative industry in a very practical work. Such programme will not only build understanding of the potential of their tangible as well as intangible heritage but also will lead young people to give their voice and concern to become involved in the protection and promotion of their World Heritage property in the future as they are tomorrow’s decision-makers to participate in heritage conservation and to respond to the continuing threats facing our World Heritage.
Country Head of Corporate Affairs Citi Indonesia Elvera N. Makki explained, “By implementing this program, we aim to increase the number of youth in the area of Borobudur and Prambanan to have better income which enables them to contribute to the local economy. Through a combination of vocational skills training and entrepreneurship preparation, these young people will gain competitive skills as well as access to financial literacy and inclusion, and other resources that set them on the path to economic success which is also supporting the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion of President Joko Widodo.”
During this program, there are four targeted districts in Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, namely Yogyakarta City, Sleman, Klaten, and Magelang, by focusing to youth communities who work in the creative industries, cultural product and intangible cultural heritage. After completing an assesment to the youth, UNESCO then launched the Business Development Training since early September 2017 for more than 225 youths in Klaten, Sleman, and Magelang. The training facilitates session about business development issues ranging from marketing into financial management of the youth business. Not only providing the training, under this component, UNESCO Office, Jakarta also assisted 2 youth centers in Karanganyar Village, Borobudur, Magelang and Kebon Village, Bayat, Klaten to promote their products and enhance their marketing strategies.
Prof. Dr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative, UNESCO Office, Jakarta, commented that the remarkable work achieved for youth empowerment program in UNESCO – Citi Indonesia assisted areas, is an excellent example of the joint cooperation between international agency, private sectors, Indonesian government, and the assisted youth communities in supporting the development of the ten key tourist destinations in Indonesia declared by President Joko Widodo in 2016. UNESCO Office, Jakarta is happy to collaborate together and provide technical support in ensuring the promotion of the creative economy sectors and Indonesia’s rich intangible cultural heritage in a number of areas across the nation, including in 2 UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, Borobudur and Prambanan.
Following the aforementioned Business Development Training, UNESCO and Citi Indonesia are also holding a Youth Creative Competition for beneficiaries from Yogyakarta area. The competition has collected 20 business development proposals from the 125 targeted beneficiaries, which now are still being assessed by the jury panel, which consisted of competent and experienced professionals and government representative. 10 best proposals to be selected by the jury will benefit from continued assistance in their business development. The assistance will be given one step at a time, in the form of advanced training suited to their needs, recommendation and facilitation in financial cooperation with monetary institutions, also marketing support in the form of showcase, promotion, potential buyers meeting, among others, according to agreement.
